A southern belle (derived from the French belle, 'beautiful') is an archetype for a white young woman of the American Old South's upper class. A Southern belle epitomized Southern hospitality, cultivation of beauty and a flirtatious yet chaste demeanor.
Uh, yeh, not so much:-)
Yeah agree with Grant, give us the title. Is she on a horse race or something?

hi sherri! sorry I didn't leave you the new URL, i'm so negligent for that lol. i like this shot, the shadows really lit up nicely on her face. great portrait and nice shallow DOF.

Liang on 29th November 2009 @ 11:38pm
Not the most healthy shot but one with great shadows and structure. Good crop, too.

Mirko Herzner on 30th November 2009 @ 12:05am
Here's a few titles: Debu-NOT. and The No,No, Sister.
(instead of Ya Ya.)

Ken on 30th November 2009 @ 12:35am
Nice ! There is something like anachronism and contradiction here. Interesting :)

Fotosco on 30th November 2009 @ 1:40am
I can think of one direction of the title you didn't choose but the title you did choose is quite intriguing too :-)

Frida on 30th November 2009 @ 5:27am
So now I'm curious as to what your title may have been.
Cool shot Sherri, I like how the mesh of the gloves match the shadows on the face.

bluechameleon on 30th November 2009 @ 7:18am
Its the Marlboro Woman. And she can do it without setting her gloves on fire.

Nick on 30th November 2009 @ 7:36am
You captured a wonderful moment of a contrasts in opposites...protecting herself from the sun while lighting up. Hmmm....not sure I see the logic. Either way, nicely captured!

Hess on 30th November 2009 @ 9:34am
Determined expression on that lady's face. The combination of the shadow pattern by the hat and the knitting of the gloves is great.

Markus Spring on 30th November 2009 @ 10:02am
A captivating shot for sure! I think the wind was blowing and she's shielding the light regardless whether the gloves or anything else catches on fire!
Wonderful close in detail and repetition of patterns makes it extra effective.

don on 30th November 2009 @ 10:22am
Oh...am not sure which I enjoy more -the speckled light that dots her face..or those lace gloves lighting the cigarette. A contradiction in terms - y'know??? Wonderful portrait!!!

Marcie on 30th November 2009 @ 11:37am
Wonderful portrait here! The genteel meshed shadow on her face and the mesh gloves contrast rather wickedly with the cigarette in her mouth.

Turnbill on 30th November 2009 @ 11:47am
I think she was a woman ahead of her time, Sherri, judging by her multi-pierced ear! :) Too bad she didn't pay attention to the dangers of smoking...as a Southern Belle!

Ginnie on 30th November 2009 @ 2:04pm
Great captured moment! Like the shadow from the hat. Curious about your title.

pernilla on 30th November 2009 @ 2:16pm
A cool portrait shot, and interesting positioning of the watermark ;)

Colors Inc on 30th November 2009 @ 2:46pm
a wealthy portrait! i like the sun seeping through the hat as well as the fabric of hat and gloves in the sun. great b/w

paolo on 30th November 2009 @ 3:40pm
i have an office mate that epitomizes the southern belle perfectly.. :D this one though, not so much.. ;D still a great capture though..

rian on 30th November 2009 @ 9:49pm
okay you know you won't get away with this, right?! Come on! What was that title! :) the way the light filters through that hat is really nice!

Arjan - PlasticDaisy on 1st December 2009 @ 4:09pm
I'm sure I can think of a few titles also but this one best left without one.

Brian Chen on 1st December 2009 @ 7:18pm
Nice portrait ! Keep on shooting people Sherri, I like it !!!

bardamu on 4th December 2009 @ 5:17pm
I like all the shadows created by this woman's hat. Great closeup. I always try to find your watermark now. It's always in the perfect place!

Mike on 7th December 2009 @ 8:26am
I just love this one, you're so good with light & shadows, bravo !
