  Yes, I often think about things like that. At the ocean I'll wonder about the path taken by the water and its constant wear on the shore. On a hike I'll pick up a stone and wonder if it has ever been touched before. Imagination runs free in places like this where nature is in command.

• Joseph, a dear friend and teacher really impressed me years ago. I was standing next to him as he spoke to a young man who was experiencing struggles in his life. The young man seemed to be blaming his troubles on people he knows, people at work, people at school.

  As I frequently find myself along the shoreline - watching the sea surging up the sands and then withdrawing. I often reflect on Joseph's words.

  All we have is the 'moment' we are currently living. It would probably be best to think of the earth and everything on it as underway, inexorably ticking off the seconds of life...at the beach and wherever we happen to be. This is clear as mud! ;-)

• Being at the sea shore is my all time favorite (well, maybe being on a yacht near the sea shore?). I always think about the relentless nature of the sea. No matter what it will continue to pound away at the land. Time is measured in tens of thousands of years. Every sunrise is a fresh start. It's mesmerizing.

Oahu Island, Hawaii


John Archibald Wheeler said, ”We live on an island surrounded by a sea of ignorance. As our island of knowledge grows, so does the shore of our ignorance.”

Makes me wonder if he spent much time standing by the sea. As I view this image it occurs to me that waves are still lapping their way to shore at this very moment. Do you ever think about things like that?
