Cerstin @ 2010-03-09 18:06:34 - I have an equal disdain for MacMansions, at least this is honestly ugly...one Grant would actually find appeasing. [posted from picturesque rural poverty] : ] : ] best...jerry

yz @ 2010-03-10 01:31:56 - I have no clue what Hipstamatic app is, Sherri, but it definitely works for this image. Once again, the quote is perfect.

foto-rolero54 @ 2010-03-10 05:01:58 - If all these sort of places are torn down, what will we photograph?!?
Turnbill @ 2010-03-10 05:57:21 - It does look hideous I can understand you lookign forward to when it has gone, and a super shot of it and love the processign highlighting even more how bad it is
JJ @ 2010-03-10 06:49:19 - It may look hideous but you have certainly given this old, sad place dignity and beauty! Sometimes change is a bit slow in coming...
martie @ 2010-03-10 07:26:14 - Love how you did this. It almost makes you feel like you are there!
Christopher @ 2010-03-10 07:40:47 - Love this nostalgic treatment. Very, very beautiful!
Reiner @ 2010-03-10 08:16:36 - Love the effect, cool shot.
Ashish Sidapara @ 2010-03-10 08:58:53 - Hmmm, looks similar to the house I grew up in. Coal miners in West Virginia don't have a lot after the coal mines start shutting down. Heck even when all the mines were going full bore they didn't have a lot. The houses were on coal mine property because most of the miners couldn't afford anywhere else. It looks like this might be on industrial property also, so who knows maybe it used to be housing for employees.
Mark Johnson @ 2010-03-10 09:43:44 - Great colors and mood - matches the subject. Sometimes I doubt this preference of so many of us photographers for worn down subjects, but they do bear the traces of their history with honesty, without and pretense.
Markus @ 2010-03-10 10:23:38 - love the effect, nice pic.
Rahul @ 2010-03-10 10:23:43 - @ Mark - You're speaking of shotgun houses. My great grandfathers worked the coal mines across the Ohio river from where you grew up. They were in southern Ohio and lived in the coal camps early on and then moved to small communities surrounding the area. My grandma lived in a shotgun house all of her life.
This structure isn't that old and was built as an office for a company. I like that it brought memories to you though.
sherri @ 2010-03-10 10:27:31 - @Sherri - The coal property I grew up on you could even see the mine structures from the house similar to what is behind this building. We moved to New Mexico before I started grade school because the coal mines shut down and potash mines were opening up in New Mexico. Funny thing is over half the population of Carlsbad, NM is from West Virginia for that very reason. I went back to W.Va. a couple of years ago, and went by to see if the house was still there... turns out you can't even get on the property w/o being a mining company employee. Oh, well, cool picture though!
Mark Johnson @ 2010-03-10 11:31:13 - EXCELLENT image - fantastic scenery, colors. mood and processing

iPhone with Hipstamatic App
The day I see this place torn down I'll lick my finger and make a check mark in the air. It's right on Main Street and it looks hideous.
Poverty, to be picturesque, should be rural. Suburban misery is as hideous as it is pitiable.
