the sterility of analog

image notes: ZEISS IKON Contina, circa 1957

I was looking at items for sale on [ Pottery Barn's site ] and was stunned to see they’re marketing a look alike of an old film camera to be used as decoration. The current price is $149.00 and they don’t take photographs. This one is not one of those. This is a real ZEISS camera.

You’ve really made the most of showing off the forms of this classic camera, Sherri. Very nostalgic, too, but for all the classic beauty of it, I still wouldn’t give up digital cameras and Lightroom!

Love your placement of the camera in the frame and the clever addition of ‘old-typewriter-styled’ text.
A really elegant and artistic picture!

I love this nostalgic shot and the quote is priceless. It reminds of an old cardiologist who was once asked which stethoscope would best aid the student in listening for heart murmurs. He smiled and said, “five dollar stethoscope, million dollar ears.”

Isn’t it amazing that they’re selling look-alike cameras for that kind of price?? Love the image..maybe you should submit it to Pottery Barn?

A gorgeous shot Sherri, the old camera looks quite superb. And I fully concur with the quote by Doug Bartlow which reminds me of one I saw today on another blog (thanks hotpixel) and which I’ve paraphrased a little…“

The fact is that relatively few photographers ever master their medium. Instead they allow the medium to master them and go on an endless chase from new body to new lens to more new lenses, never staying with one piece of equipment long enough to learn its full capacities, becoming lost in a maze of technical information that is of little or no use since they don’t know what to do with it” Edward Weston, 1927

Nice image, I’ve always loved cameras almost as much as taking pictures, I can easily understand why people collect them.
